IF
NOT YOU, WHO? IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

TOMORROW
IS TOO LATE!

1 OF
MAY 2009

We are the same people that demonstrated on the
streets of Reggio Emilia the first of May 2007 against the exploitation of
clandestine manpower, the ones that after several mobilizations one year later marched
through the city on the migrant first of May.

Even this year we want to fill the streets of
our city. It’s a particular year, and we are experiencing things that we hadn’t
yet encountered since we live these lands. The crisis that we are passing
through signs an epoch and it co involves many of us, migrant workers and
Italian workers. Many are the people depending on the wages guarantee fund,
many are the people that have already lost there work and that can’t find
another. The installments of the loan that accumulates, the impossibility to
pay the bills because of the increasing rents, the bills to pay and the work we
can’t find makes our everyday lives unsustainable. We are in many to pay the
price of this crisis, a crisis that we haven’t caused. The students pay the
financial cuts on the school loosing rights in the education system and the
public workers suffer the discharge of precarious workers increasing the crisis
of staff, us migrants loosing our jobs we will also loose our permission to
stay and in this way the irregularity will continue to increase with heavy
repercussions in the social sphere. Meanwhile, the Government gives money to
the bancs, to the industrial powers and to big financers.

This situation have generated a social climate
of fear, which many time finds simplistic answers in the so called war amongst
poor were it becomes easier to attack the most vulnerable instead of raging
against the responsible, the potent and the rich. It’s easier and less
challenging to think that it’s our neighbor that robs us from what should be
ours. But that neighbor in reality is in our own situation, lives the same
fears and is trying to survive in the same world. And it’s in this climate of
fear were the “package of security” is born. But the security of who, security
for who? Who will feel more secure if us migrants pay more money for our
permission to stay, if we live here without our families because the parameters
that enables us to rejoin gets restricted, if the doctors will have to report
people without documents that ask for healthcare assistance, if there will be
prohibitions against manifestations, if the strikes only can be virtual?

The only security that remains is that too
loose our rights.

In this climate, even in a city like Reggio
Emilia, the right wing movements like the newly opened fascist library of Casa
Pound.

We think that the answer to this climate of
fear is to tear down the wall of distrust and indifference with solidarity, and
to fight together against a bigger enemy, the enemy that we really have in
common. Therefore on the first of May we invite everybody, migrant and Italian
workers, people depending on the wages guarantee fund unemployed, students,
teachers and healthcare workers but also all the citizens that want to shout
out loud I don’t feel afraid, I demonstrate, I go out, I don’t want the
militarization of the public spaces, I’m here and I wont pay this crisis, for a
first of May 2009 of struggle.
